Working Principle

The LT3013HFE#TRPBF voltage regulator utilizes a reference voltage source, an error amplifier and an output current limiting circuit with a current mirror current source. The core of the voltage regulator is a voltage error amplifier which senses the output voltage of the regulator. The voltage error amplifier is also configured so that it operates with a closed loop when in regulation. The error amplifier output is compared to the reference voltage and the voltage difference is then amplified and the result is compared against the outputs current limit set point. When the output current limit is exceeded, the current limit circuit is engaged.

The output current limit of the LT3013HFE#TRPBF is set by an external resistor divider. As the output current increases, the voltage drop across the resistor divider also increases. When the voltage across the resistor divider reaches the current limit threshold voltage, the voltage error amplifier will be enabled and the output will be limited in order to maintain the current limit set point. The output voltage is then regulated to the reference voltage of the error amplifier.

The voltage reference of the LT3013HFE#TRPBF is generated by a voltage divider circuit composed of an external resistor and a small on-chip reference current source. The output of the voltage reference is set by the external resistor and the voltage reference circuit is also capable of providing temperature compensation. This allows for greater accuracy of the output voltage.
