Working Principle

A Zener diode, like other diodes, will allow current to flow in one direction only -- from anode to cathode. When the voltage across the Zener diode reaches its rated value, the diode breaks down, due to avalanche effect caused by the increased injection of charge carriers, in both directions and so, allows current to pass in either direction.

In the case of the ZMY8V2-GS08 diode, it is designed with a maximum power rating of 500mW and a maximum operating temperature of 85°C. It has a maximum reverse voltage of 8V and a regulated voltage of 7.5V. The maximum allowable reverse current at peak reverse voltage is 500 μA and the capacitance between terminals is of 2pF. It is designed in a SOD-123 package which features an Hermetically sealed glass case.
