Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) Diode is a protective device used to protect a piece of electronic equipment from transients such as electrostatic discharge (ESD) and lightning. The JANTX1N5774 is a Bi-directional TVS diode designed to protect a range of electronic circuits from voltage transient surges. It is designed with two avalanche breakdown regions, a bidirectional Zener diode and an integrated ESD protection network to provide protection from ESD and other transient events.

Application field

Working Principle

The working principle of TVS diode is very simple. It is designed to provide a low resistance path to ground when a voltage above a certain level is applied. When the applied voltage is below the breakdown voltage of the diode, it acts like an open switch with very little current flowing through it. The reverse breakdown voltage is the voltage at which the diode turns on and begins to conduct current. When the voltage is above the breakdown voltage, the diode turns on and begins to clamp the voltage, thereby preventing it from exceeding a predetermined level and protecting the circuit from overvoltage conditions.

During normal operation, the clamping voltage is set to the slow breakdown voltage of the TVS diode. This value is typically around 5V. When the voltage reaches this level, the TVS diode turns on and begins to clamp the voltage. If the voltage continues to rise beyond this level, the TVS diode may turn on faster and clamp the voltage at a higher level, thereby protecting the circuit from overvoltage conditions.

Another important feature of TVS diodes is that they are bidirectional. This means that the same device can be used to protect the circuit from both positive and negative transients. This helps eliminate the need for two separate devices that must be individually designed and tested, and helps reduce overall cost and complexity.
