Fuses are widely used in low voltage and high voltage AC, DC power supply system, to protect the power system from overloaded, shorted, or ground fault damage. KTQ-5 is one type of the fuses, which are mainly used in alternating current switch devices. The application field and working principle of a KTQ-5 will be discussed in this article.
KTQ-5 fuses are designed for indoor use and are able to withstand momentary overloads. It is specifically manufactured for medium voltage and low voltage applications, such as relays, contactors, switches, and Transformers. KTQ-5 is the most commonly used fuse for medium voltage and low voltage applications. The rated current of a KTQ-5 range from 1A to 200A.
In terms of the construction of the KTQ-5, its body is composed of thermoplastic material and it has a copper alloy inner core. The inner core is connected with the fuse link to provide additional current bearing capacity. There is also a bell-shaped ceramic insert which has four air gaps and a shield of copper for protection of the circuit. On the outside of the bell-shaped ceramic insert, there is a lump of aluminum oxide as a safety protector.
The working principle of a KTQ-5 is as follows: If overload happens, the current through the KTQ-5 will be increased. Once it exceeds the rated current, the fuse link will deform and the internal arc will be established prematurely, transferring the current to the fuse link to cut off the circuit. The aluminum oxide safety protector will melt it at the highest temperature when the current is excessive, thus preventing the current from entering other parts of the circuit, thus limiting the damage.
In summary, KTQ-5 is a widely used fuse for medium voltage and low voltage applications. It is able to withstand momentary overloads and is featured with an inner core with fuse link, bell-shaped ceramic insert, and an aluminum oxide safety protector to ensure the circuit safety. The rated current of a KTQ-5 range from 1A to 200A. The working principle of the fuse is to cut off the circuit through the internal arc when the current exceeds the rated current.
