Transil diodes also referred to as TVS diodes are a specialized type of diode that act as a voltage clamp and shield against high voltage transients. The SMF64A-T13 is a member of the SMF61A-T Series of Transil diodes. This fast acting diode is designed to defend sensitive components against transient over voltage.

The SMF64A-T13 is a 5.5 x 3.5 mm surface mount device that is capable of clamping up to 13 V. It has an outstanding level of power dissipation of 2.5 W in an 8/20 μs pulse. In an 8/20 μs pulse, the SMF64A-T13 can withstand surge voltages up to 600 W peak power. The device helps protect against electrostatic discharges up to 15 KV, and has very low turn-on time of 1.7 ns, and a high peak pulse current carrying capacity of 70 A. The connection of the SMF64A-T13 is made via three terminals.

The primary application of the SMF64A-T13 is to protect equipment from transients generated from RF transmitters, inductive switching loads, motor drives, short circuits, lightning, and machine to machine interface. During a surge, the SMF64A-T13 clamps the voltage, preventing it from further rise in voltage that could potentially cause damage to the sensitive components in the circuit. The device has a low standoff voltage that helps to increase the protective margin of the circuit.
