Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are widely used in many electronics because they offer some of the highest capacitances of any capacitor on the market today. The ESMM251VSN471MR25T series of aluminum electrolytic capacitors are no exception. With a large range of available capacitances, and a compact size, these capacitors provide an ideal solution for many circuit designs.

The main advantages of aluminum electrolytic capacitors, over their alternatives, are their high capacitance-to-volume ratio, and their low equivalent series resistance (ESR). These two features make them very attractive for use in applications such as power supply filtering, audio-frequency bypasses, and AC coupling after voltage regulators.

The ESMM251VSN471MR25T are designed primarily for mid-range applications, with a capacitance range of 4.7 to 470uF and a voltage range of 25-100V. They are also able to support an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C, depending on their capacitance ratings. These capacitors have an operating life of up to 1000 hours when used at rated voltage and temperatures and are typically available in lead free versions for improved safety and environmental protection.

The working principle of aluminum electrolytic capacitors is based on the physical phenomenon that occurs when two dissimilar metals are immersed in an electrolyte solution. Charges are of two types, positive and negative, and when a voltage is applied between the two metals, the positive charges migrate to the negative metal plate and the negative charges migrate to the positive metal plate. This creates an accumulation of charge on the plates, which is the basis of capacitance. When the voltage supply is removed the charges remain, allowing the capacitor to continue to store electrical energy as long as the electrolyte solution remains.

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are also praised for their relatively low leakage current. This type of capacitor, due to its unique construction, creates a non-reactive barrier between the plate materials. This barrier prevents current leakage as long as the integrity of the device is maintained. If the device is damaged from overvoltage, excessive temperature or aging, then current leakage can occur.
