Interface - Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS)Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) is widely used to generate a wide range of signals. The technology enables users to generate sinusoidal, triangular, sawtooth, and rectangular waveforms of programmable frequencies precisely and efficiently. The AD9952YSVZ is a feature rich, proven, low-cost direct digital synthesis (DDS) engine that features a PLL-up conversion-based Architecture (PUCA) with a four-phase sigma delta modulator integrated on Intel’s FSDM 200 digital signal processor (DSP). This application field is used in embedded systems applications with stringent spectral requirements, such as medical instrumentation, communications, industrial control and test and measurement equipment, specifically in areas where high performance and flexibility are essential.A direct digital synthesizer is a device that creates digital signals with programmable frequency, amplitude, phase and other parameters. The direct digital synthesis (DDS) architecture enables the user to program the frequency and phase components of a signal. DDS generators utilize a phase-accumulator technology, where a phase increment is calculated using a numerically-controlled oscillator (NCO), which then drives a sigma delta modulator.The AD9952YSVZ utilizes the same phase-accumulator technology, where a phase increment is calculated using a numerically-controlled oscillator (NCO). The NCO is the integral part of the DDS, as a single NCO can generate multiple signals of different frequencies simultaneously. The AD9952YSVZ also utilizes the four-phase sigma-delta modulator, which is an alternative way of achieving high levels of resolution in the frequency and phase accuracy of a signal.The main advantage of the architecture of the AD9952YSVZ, is the flexibility of being able to generate a wide range of frequencies with a single device. Along with the flexibility, the architecture provides excellent frequency resolution and low jitter, which gives the device a wide dynamic range and enables precision control over the frequency and phase of a signal.The AD9952YSVZ also offers a wide range of modulation capability, which is used for applications such as FSK and BPSK. It integrates a low-noise divider circuit, which allows the user to divide the clock signal by an integer or a fraction, or to derive a divided signal with the same frequency while allowing the time base of the NCO to remain unchanged.One of the main features of the AD9952YSVZ is its wide power supply range. It can operate on a single +3.3V supply, and its wide power range allows the device to be used in a wide range of power levels, making it suitable for low power or battery operated applications.The AD9952YSVZ integrates control logic and multiplexers to deliver a system-on-chip solution with all the necessary components for a broadband DDS system. It is designed for direct modulating phase, amplitude, frequency and frequency phase modulation, and data rates up to 8 MHz. The device also supports a variety of phase shifting modes including fast, slow, programmable and random, as well as modulation order of up to 64 bits.The AD9952YSVZ also has advanced control modes, such as multi-channel synchronized operation, fast data RAM and single-data RAM modes, which allow the user to program different parameters for each channel.
