As the rotor turns, the magnetic fields generate a sine wave signal that is picked up by the optics board mounted inside the housing. The optics board includes a light source and photo-detector pair. The light source is an LED that emits a narrow beam of light in a specific direction. The light is then focused by a lens onto an array of pits printed or etched into the rotor. As the rotor turns, the lens reflects the pulses of light from the pits into the photo-detector. The detector converts the pulses of light into a voltage signal, which in turn is converted into an electrical output. This electrical output can be used to determine the exact absolute angle of the rotor.
