A DC-DC converter is an electronic device that adapts a DC power supply to a load requiring a different voltage or current value. The SPAN02E-12 is a wide input range, isolated non-synchronous flyback converter designed for medical applications. It features high efficiency and excellent EMI performance meeting EN 55032 and CISPR 32 Class B standards.

Application field

The SPAN02E-12 can be used in applications such as battery-powered medical devices, healthcare equipment, patient monitoring systems and wearables, and other 4kV isolated DC/DC supply applications. It has a wide input voltage range from 4.5V to 45V and operates over the temperature range of -40°C to 125°C. The output voltage is adjustable from 0.8V to 5V and delivers up to 20W of power. It delivers up to 2A at the output of the device. The device has a simple pin configuration with Enable, Trim, and Over Temperature Protection, and offers a high Efficiency of 91%

Working Principle

The SPAN02E-12 uses a non-synchronous Flyback topology to regulate the output voltage with an operating frequency of 400kHz. It features a high up-turn PWM current mode control, allowing for better line and load regulation and better efficiency. The device adopts a constant switching frequency control, maintaining the switching frequency over a wide input voltage range. It also has a wide range of line and load regulation behaviours. The device is highly efficient due to its synchronous rectification and adaptive active ON and OFF-time control.

The SPAN02E-12 has over temperature protection (OTP) that trips the device at an over temperature of 140 °C leading to a latching shutdown. The device has an under voltage lock out (UVLO) that turns off the device at a low voltage of 4.8V with a hysteresis of 300mV so that the output voltage stays regulated during a low voltage input. The device has low self-heating of only 0.8°C/W(TJ), higher power density, and cost-effective isolated non-synchronous flyback.

The SPAN02E-12 is extremely reliable and efficient as it has a no-load quiescent (standby) power consumption of only 4 mW and an operating temperature range of -40°C to 125°C. It is also available in a PSOF-10 package, making it cost-effective.
