It offers industry-leading circuit architecture for efficient current sourcing and sinking providing excellent protection features against short-circuit, overcurrent, and reversed polarity. It is a three-terminal adjustable linear regulator that provides an adjustable output configuration from 1V to 6.3V.

Working Principle

The BA33D18HFP-TR is a low dropout regulator which operates in ways that are similar to a standard linear regulator. The input voltage is fed through a pair of resistors, R1 and R2, to provide a stable reference voltage for the regulator. The regulator includes an error amp which compares the voltage across R2 with an internal reference voltage. If the voltage across R2 is lower than the reference voltage, the output is increased. If the voltage across R2 is higher than the reference voltage, the output is decreased.When an external load is connected to the device’s output, a voltage drop occurs across R2, lowering the voltage across R2, thus causing the error amp to increase the output voltage. At the same time, current is being supplied to the load by the regulator, creating a voltage drop across the internal pass element, usually a transistor, resulting in the degraded dropout voltage. The BA33D18HFP-TR’s dropout voltage is minimized over the entire load range by utilizing a low drop-out architecture with three integrated transistors operating in parallel.When the load current is increased, the BA33D18HFP-TR responds by increasing the number of parallel transistors to cope with the increased load current. This, in turn, increases the internal resistance of the regulator and limits the output voltage to a safe voltage level for the downstream circuit. The BA33D18HFP-TR also has a soft-start function, which allows it to ramp up slowly and avoid any inrush current to the load. This helps protect the load from voltage or current surges.The BA33D18HFP-TR has an extremely reliable protection scheme comprising of a Reverse Polarity Protection (RPP) circuit, a thermal Protected Overtemperature Shutdown (POTS) circuit and an Over-Current Protection (OCP) circuit. The RPP circuit protects the regulator’s input and output terminals in the event of a reversed polarity connection. The POTS circuit prevents the regulator from getting thermally overloaded and provides additional protection to the input power source and the load. The OCP circuit monitors the current and drops the output voltage when the load current is above the ratings of the regulator.
