L78M05CV-DG (Center Voltage 5V) is a high performance three-terminal positive voltage regulator that utilizes STMicroelectronics proprietary VIPower™ M0-3 technology. The device is available in TO-220, DPAK and SOT-89 packages.

The L78M05CV-DG is designed to provide a regulated output voltage of +5V, a maximum output current of 500mA and up to 10% over regulation to compensate for line voltage drops. It has an integrated voltage reference and limited power dissipation internally compensated for temperature and line changes.

The L78M05CV-DG linear regulator also has an internal current limit, over temperature and over voltage protection, as well as a trimmed output voltage accuracy of ±1.5%. An optional power-saving sleep mode and a fast turn-on time are also available.

Application Field and Working Principle

The L78M05CV-DG can be used in a wide range of applications, including telecommunications, automotive, industrial, office and home equipment, medical and audio/video equipment. It can be used as a linear voltage regulator, low dropout regulator, or a secondary switch mode regulator.

The working principle of the L78M05CV-DG is based on the operation of its internal components. The voltage of the input is compared with an internal reference voltage. This reference voltage is produced by an internal zener diode datasheet. The error amplifier adjusts the output of the power transistor so that the output voltage equals the reference voltage. The voltage was then stabilized by a pair of internal compensation capacitors.

As the input voltage varies, the error amplifier adjusts the output voltage to maintain its accuracy in response to the reference voltage. It also protects from transients by using the power transistor’s built-in protection in case of overvoltage or overcurrent. Lastly, thermal protection is provided by the power diode.

The device can also be configured as a switching regulator, by adding an external switch, in order to provide a regulated output in applications that require high efficiency. When the switch is open, the device only needs a small dropout voltage, typically 2V, at a given load current.

This makes it very well suited for use in space-saving "point of load" applications where high efficiency is required. It can also be used as an elliptical filter, providing a high ripple rejection.

The L78M05CV-DG linear regulator is available in the small TO-220 and DPAK packages, and the SOT-89 package. It is a cost-effective solution for applications where space and power efficiency is of high importance.
