The UC3844D8 is a current mode, pulse width modulation (PWM), DC-to-DC switching controller. It is part of the UCx84x family of current-mode pulse width modulation controllers. Developed primarily for use in low-power, off-line and DC-to-DC applications such as switching regulators, inverters and motor control applications, the UC3844D8 can also be used in applications where ac and dc switching is involved in both power level and voltage regulation.The UC3844D8 includes both an oscillator and a logic circuit which form the control part of the device. The UC3844D8 also includes an adjustable soft-start, a current limiting circuit, a thermal protection circuit and a free-wheeling or synchronous rectifier circuits.The main application field of the UC3844D8 is in voltage and current regulation circuits. A few of the many applications in which the UC3844D8 can be used include motor control applications, DC-DC converters, switcher regulators, switching frequency control, switch-mode power supplies, chopper circuits, and SMPS.The UC3844D8 working principle involves the control of a MOSFET or IGBT switch (or series pair of switches) by providing a signal to the gate of the switch. This signal takes the form of a pulse width signal, typically 10kHz to 200kHz, which is modulated by controlling the duty-cycle of the signal.The UC3844D8 oscillator is driven on by an external timing circuit. This timing circuit is part of the control part of the circuit, and can provide a signal to the MOSFET switch which is in synchrony with the external timing circuit. This signal is also modulated, allowing for the adjustment of the duty-cycle of the signal.The current limiting circuit incorporated into the UC3844D8 provides an additional level of current protection. This circuit monitors the current flowing in the MOSFET switch, and limits the current to a set value. If the current flowing in the switch exceeds the set value, the excess current is routed through the current limiting circuit, preventing the current from increasing further.The UC3844D8 also includes a thermal protection circuit. This circuit monitors the temperature of the switch, and if the temperature of the switch rises above a predetermined value, the circuit will reduce the current flowing in the switch and protect the switch from thermal damage.The UC3844D8 also includes an adjustable soft-start circuit, which allows the user to set the start time of the output switch. This feature reduces the output inrush current during start-up, extending the life of the switch.The UC3844D8 also includes a free-wheeling or synchronous rectifier circuit. This circuit provides an additional feature which can be used to extend the life of an AC or DC switching device.The UC3844D8 is an excellent choice for a variety of applications, such as motor control applications, DC-DC converters, switcher regulators, switching frequency control, switch-mode power supplies, chopper circuits, and SMPS.
