LM3354MM-1.8/NOPB Application Field and Working PrinciplePMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) is a multi-functional integrated circuit usually used in the process of power conversion, energy storage and power management. In particular, Voltage Regulators and DC-DC Switched Regulators are the main types used for power conversion. The LM3354MM-1.8/NOPB is one such DC-DC Switched Regulator.In basic terms, a DC-DC Switched Regulator is an integrated circuit which is used to take a given input voltage, and convert it to whatever output voltage is desired. These switches are usually referred to as the power stages of the circuit. To ensure that the voltage fed to the output is always accurate, regardless of changes to the external components, the LM3354 has an integrated feedback loop which uses an error-amplifier and a voltage-reference.When the voltage difference between the input and output of the regulator is large, the LM3354 is capable of operating in a ‘discontinuous’ or ‘burst mode’. In this mode, the power MOSFET switch will be \'open\' for the majority of the time, with only brief moments when it is \'closed\'. This helps to significantly reduce the power loss over the channel, as well as the ‘switching noise’ which is often present in switched regulators.The LM3354MM-1.8/NOPB is a highly efficient DC-DC regulator, capable of up to 95% efficiency across its entire operating range. It is also one of the few voltage regulators on the market with a ‘simple-mode’; this is a combination of both the synchronous-rectifier and error-amplifier which is made to work together in a single configuration; reducing the number of external components, and improving the overall power efficiency.In addition to the features mentioned above, the LM3354 is significantly smaller than other regulators, occupying only 1mm² of board area. It is also highly durable and rugged, with an extremely wide operating temperature range from -40ºC to +85ºC - allowing it to be used in a range of different applications.The LM3354MM-1.8/NOPB is primarily used in applications where efficient and reliable power conversion, in combination with low-noise operation, is needed. It is most commonly used in automotive computing applications such as vehicle infotainment systems, or in industrial and IoT applications which require low-level signal processing.The advantages of the LM3354 are numerous, the most important being its extremely high efficiency, its low noise output, and its small size.
