AP1551SL-13 Application Field and Working Principle

A Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) DC-DC voltage regulator like the AP1551SL-13 is a high-performance, highly integrated voltage regulator designed to generate multiple regulated power supplies from a single input supply up to 5A. This makes its application an integral part of a wide range of power supplies, ranging from automotive, mobile, industrial and aerospace applications. It is especially useful in a variety of applications such as point-of-load (POLs), battery connected applications, and situations where more than one regulation is desired. The regulator is also distinctively suitable for sensitive microprocessors, efficiently meeting their low voltage and high current requirements.

The AP1551SL-13 features a single-chip 48-pin PQFN package with integrated power management, current protection and automated testing, thereby allowing for a compact design. This makes it suitable for tight spaces and small form factors, such as mobile and embedded systems. The regulator is designed to handle up to 5A of output current, and features a wide range of output voltages, going all the way up to 24V. It also has an adjustable output voltage range which can be programmed using the onboard Digital-Analog Converter (DAC). Furthermore, the integrated over-voltage protection (OVP) prevents the output voltage from exceeding the programmed maximum. The AP1551SL-13 also includes programmable output current limiter (OCL) which helps protect against overload events and undervoltage lockout (UVLO) which prevents the system from getting powered up when the input voltage is too low.

The AP1551SL-13 employs a pulse width modulation (PWM) control method to achieve efficient power conversion. In this process, a switching regulator switches between two states to enable power transfer from the input source to the output. The input voltage is first converted into a high-frequency pulse train which is then fed to the main switch of the regulator. This pulse train is then rectified to generate a smooth DC voltage which is used to drive the load.

The regulator contains an internal power switch, a synchronous rectifier and a control circuit. The power switch consists of the MOSFET or transistor while the synchronous rectifier is responsible for the efficient recovery of the power from the output circuit back to the input. The control circuit generates a pulse width modulated signal, which is then used to regulate the power switch and to regulate the output voltage. Apart from that, it is also used to enable safety features such as over-current, over-voltage and under-voltage protection.
