The LM5025SD is a wide Input voltage range one-to-one flyback integrated synchronous dual stage DC to DC controller, capable of handling high-power applications. It is designed to optimize the design of power electronic circuits by integrating controller, gate drivers, and high side and low side power switches into one single IC package. The IC can be used in medium to high power applications, such as very high power factor chargers, mid-range telecom, server, rugged computing and other applications.

The LM5025SD has several advantages such as a wide input voltage range (4.5V to 54V) and high efficiency due to its two-stage, dual half bridge architecture. Also, it is designed with low power consumption and a fast start-up time. Finally, the LM5025SD offers a variety of safety and protection measures, including an overvoltage protection, an overcurrent protection, an undervoltage lockout, an overcurrent protection, a power good indicator and an active droop control for tracking purposes.

The primary application field of the LM5025SD includes the medium to high-power application. It can be used in multiple applications, including isolated DC to DC converters, high-power factor chargers, power converters and high-power electronic systems.

The working principle of the LM5025SD is based on a modified two-stage, dual half bridge architecture. The two phase full bridge architecture consists of the two phase synchronous switching stages and the two phase active clamping stages. The switching stages of the LM5025SD comprises of two high side and two low side power MOSFETs. The low side power MOSFETs can be easily and quickly switched on/off by applying a proper voltage to their corresponding control pins. However, the high side power MOSFETs can only be controlled by the on/off line signals.

The two phase active clamping of the LM5025SD prevents both high drain-to-source and drain-to-gate voltage. Active clamping is implemented by two N-type power MOSFETs. When the duty cycle of the LM5025SD is too low, the active clamping eliminates the possibility of a large negative voltage at the drain terminal of the high side power MOSFET, thus preventing any static and dynamic problems. The active clamp also provides an additional feature, namely the power good indicator.

In addition, the feed forward architecture of the LM5025SD helps improve the accuracy of the output voltage. It reduces the ripple output voltage, lowers synchronicity errors, and hence provides good load transient response and stability.
