.Lithium-ion batteries are the standard energy source for a variety of portable electronic devices. As lithium-ion batteries become the device power source of choice, the need to effectively manage their charge has become increasingly important. The MCP73812T-420I/OT battery charger can cost-effectively and efficiently provide effecitve charge management of single-cell Li-ion batteries operating from either USB or power adapter inputs.
The MCP73812T-420I/OT integrated converter is designed to provide constant current/constant voltage with linear termination for single-cell lithium-ion/polymer battery applications. In addition, an external N-channel MOSFET allows the user to control external power during battery charging. This PMIC - Battery Charger is capable of operating from either 5V USB or an external adapter, allowing small form factor portable products such as cell phones, digital cameras, Bluetooth headsets, and MP3 players to charge directly from USB port.

Working Principle
The MCP73812T-420I/OT is capable of charging single-cell lithium-ion/polymer batteries in a variety of ways based on the needs of the application. As current is drawn from the battery to power the device, the charger continually monitors the battery voltage. When the battery voltage drops below a certain threshold, the charger begins to re-charge the battery. The charger begins by applying a constant current/constant voltage until charge termination is reached. The current is then dropped to a low maintenance pre-set level. If connected to a USB or power adapter, the MCP73812T-420I/OT is capable of maintaining the battery voltage at a float voltage level.
The MCP73812T-420I/OT has two modes of operation. In the current-limited mode, the charger monitors the battery voltage and terminates the charge when the voltage reaches 4.17V. In autonomous pre-conditioning mode, the charger is capable of charging fully discharged Li-ion batteries to a minimum of 2.8V while maintaining charge current limit. The charger terminates the pre-conditioning charging mode upon reaching 2.8V. When the battery voltage level reaches the charge voltage (4V±5%)during normal charging, the charger continues to apply a linear termination voltage up to 4.17V.
