Working Principle

Both of these translator devices work on the same principle: voltage-level translation. Inputs (I1 to I4) are typically driven by logic families with operating voltages up to the Vcc level. For low-voltage logic applications which may require a high voltage I/O, these devices allow the logic signals to be directly shifted from the input level to the output level.

In addition, the 74AVCH1T45GW includes a “Mixed-Mode Signal” option that allows low voltage output drivers to operate at an intermediate voltage between the source voltage in which differential outputs swing between 0V and Vcc. This “Mixed-Mode Signal” feature improves signal integrity in low voltage signal transmission, especially in applications with long trace lengths.

The 74HC125 has an active-high output-enable input (OE) that is used to turn on the outputs. The OE signal should be driven with the same voltage as the VCC supply. This provides high speed operation and excellent compatibility between the VCC supply and the input signal.

The 74HC125 also features an “open-drain” capability. This provides flexibility for output power management in applications with multiple levels of power prior to the output stage. In other words, the output voltage levels can be varied from VCC to GND by simply controlling the “drive strength” of the device.
