General Description
The L78M18ABDT is a high performance three terminal positive linear regulator with very low dropout voltage. This small surface mount package can provide output currents draw up to 500mA with up to 1.3V dropout voltage. It is designed to accept a wide input voltage range from 3V to 18V making it very suitable for portable applications such as mobile phones, digital cameras, PDAs and other battery or single cell power-powered applications. The device is equipped with thermal overload protection and short circuit current limiting which makes it ideal for any industrial or commercial application where a dependable and stable power supply is required.

Working Principle
The device utilizes a voltage reference, three control transistors and pass elements. This two stage design reduces both power dissipation and output noise. The first stage consists of two series pass elements and a low-dropout voltage reference. The total output voltage before the voltage reference is determined by the size of the two pass elements in the series. The voltage reference establishes a reference voltage and the base of the first stage series pass element is connected to it. The second stage is a Darlington pair amplifier which provides voltage regulation and a low dropout voltage.
The input voltage is applied to the input pin, and is regulated by the series pass elements.The voltage reference establishes a constant voltage across the base of the series pass element. The voltage reference is adjustable through the adjustment pin which can be used to adjust the output voltage range according to the application. The output of the device is regulated by the Darlington amplifier which monitors the output voltage and any variations in the input voltage.
The L78M18ABDT device is equipped with thermal overload protection and short circuit current limiting which make it ideal for any industrial or commercial application where a dependable and stable power supply is required.
