Working Principle
The L78M06ACDT-TR regulator operates on the principle of feedback to maintain a stable output voltage. It uses an internal voltage reference and a sense pin to measure the output voltage and adjust the output accordingly. To protect the regulator from excessive current, an on-chip current-limit circuit is provided. In addition, thermal shutdown and current-limiting features provide extra protection against runaway conditions.
The regulator operates by maintaining a constant voltage drop between the input and output voltage. This voltage drop is mainly determined by the value of the series pass element, typically a MOSFET or BJT. The regulator senses when the output voltage starts to deviate from its reference level and quickly adjusts the series pass element to maintain a constant voltage. When the load is increased, the series pass element will increase its output current in order to keep the output voltage steady.
If an overcurrent event occurs, the current-limit circuit will reduce the output current and limit the maximum output current. The current-limit circuit will also notify the system of the overcurrent event by raising an overtemperature alarm. When the overcurrent condition has cleared, the current-limit circuit will restore power to the system and resume normal operation.
The L78M06ACDT-TR is able to operate at very low supply voltages, allowing for the utilization of low-power sources such as portable batteries. It also features excellent line and load regulation, making it suitable for a variety of applications.
