MIC49150BMM-TR Voltage Regulators - Linear Application and Working Principle

The MIC49150BMM-TR is an integrated linear voltage regulator belonging to the Potential Monitoring and Intensity Control (PMIC) category. Voltage regulation requires careful control of voltage levels so that the system performs as designed and expected. The MIC49150BMM-TR integrates both step-up and step-down linear regulator circuitry with a dual-channel multiplexer and 10-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) into a single chip. The two transistors are independently controlled by the built-in multiplexer and DAC circuit. The DAC allows for precision adjustment of the output voltage by simply changing the digital code of the DAC. The multiplexer allows the user to select either the step-up or step-down path which can provide flexibility in controlling the output voltage.In order to maximize its efficiency, the MIC49150BMM-TR operates by allowing the voltage to be adjusted rapidly and accurately by controlling the peak current flow through the integrated transistors. This peak current flow is known as the peak current-mode control. In this mode, the transistor will turn on and off periodically in order to control the flow of current and maintain the desired output voltage. The average output voltage is determined by the duty cycle of the switching transistor. If the duty cycle is increased, the average output voltage will be higher and vice versa. The MIC49150BMM-TR also utilizes a low-dropout (LDO) regulator which provides the voltage for the linear regulator circuitry. The LDO regulator provides output voltage stability and helps prevent the output voltage from fluctuating due to changes in environmental conditions or load conditions. This ensures a tight current limit and minimal power wasted as heat. The LDO regulator also helps to reduce the quiescent current and provide excellent line regulation.
