The LF85CPT is a 3-terminal adjustable voltage regulator specifically designed to replace conventional zener-type voltage references, while offering improved performance, reduced noise and parasitic oscillations, better temperature stability and greater line regulation. The device features a nominal output voltage of 5V, while an output voltage range of 1.25V to 19V is possible when the output voltage is adjusted with an external resistor divider. As a linear voltage regulator, the LF85CPT is designed to provide a regulated output voltage through a series pass transistor.

The LF85CPT\'s linear regulating function is based on the comparison of its two internal reference voltages. It contains a feedback circuit that establishes a predetermined ratio between the two referencevoltages. The ratio is maintained by a series passtransistor that controls the voltage on the output terminal. In normal operation, a voltage is established at the junction of R1 and R2 that is relatively equal to the steady state value established by the feedback circuit. When the output voltage deviates from its setpoint, the feedback voltage changes proportionally, and the series pass transistor will increase or decrease its conduction to maintain a constant output voltage.

The LF85CPT current limit feature is basedon the voltage drop across the series pass transistor resulting from its base current. When the output current becomes excessive or begins to exceed internal design limit, the current level is sensed by the control loop, causing the circuit to rapidly reduce the base current of the series pass transistor, effectively limiting total load current.

The LF85CPT thermal shutdown protects against excessive power dissipation resulting from currents higher than the rated maximum value. When the junction temperature reaches approximately 150°C, the thermal shutdown circuit initiates an automatic shutdown of the device. Once the device temperature is belowthe thermal shutdown limit (typically 120°C) the device will automatically reset.

The LF85CPT is most commonly used inapplication such as Telecom gateways, PON equipment, Central Office power supplies, Intrusion systems, Modems, Networking equipment, Video and Audio systems, Remote Accessories, and Security systems. The device is particularly well suited for applications requiring tight control of the output voltage, while still allowing variable output voltage via an external resistor divider.
