The VSC8541XMV-03 is a industrial grade multi-port copper gigabit phy (GP) transceiver designed and manufactured by Vitesse Solutions. It is compliant with the IEEE 802.3 and Multi-Gigabit Ethernet standards. This device has on-chip surge protection for ultimate protection against ESD and surge events. It has 4 independent Fast Ethernet PHY ports and supports both Wake-on-LAN and energy efficiency features, including Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) and Cable Length Detection.
Working Principle
The working principle of the VSC8541XMV-03 device is based on the concept of a sequencer. The chip contains a digital sequencer that continuously reads the ports and data lines of the four ports to determine the current operating state. Based on the current operating state, the device initiates the necessary electrical, optical and protocol operations to establish, maintain and release the communications link. During the data-link establishment process, the digital sequencer reads each port independently, determines the port speed and negotiates the link status with the corresponding connected device. Once the link has been established, the device\'s transmitter and receiver layers then pass data from the port on to the data link layer.
The VSC8541XMV-03\'s receiver layer also continuously monitors the received data to ensure that the data stream meets the link quality requirements. If the link quality deteriorates, the receiver layer initiates re-negotiation of the link parameters (such as the port speed) to improve the link quality. The device also has on-chip security functions, such as port-based authentication and encryption.
The device is designed for simple, low-cost systems and does not require any external memory or complex processor. It supports multiple frequency channels and is capable of running on a single external Time-of-Day clock. Its high-speed Physical Coding Sublayer (PCS) offers plenty of performance and link integrity, while its low-power consumption and small form factor make it an ideal choice for space-constrained applications.
