PMIC - Hot Swap Controllers are the newest type of integrated circuits designed to address the difficulties of safely connecting and working with board level power modules. In particular, MAX5900LCEUT+T is a Hot Swap Controller designed to protect circuit boards, systems, load switches, and power supplies from external power surges, over-current and inverse voltage transients. It also provides an analog-configurable soft-start, over and under-voltage sensing, and per-channel current limit protections.
The MAX5900LCEUT+T is designed to provide power and control to an application field in which a circuit requires protection from external power surges or over-current spikes. This can be especially helpful for powering a system, or for connecting and disconnecting external loads or devices. The MAX5900LCEUT+T can also be used to provide multiple independent powers from a single source. By using the MAX5900LCEUT+T’s Hot Swap feature, a board can be easily powered-up and powered-down in an orderly and safe manner.
The MAX5900LCEUT+T has a simple and efficient architecture that allows for easy power failover and adjustable over/under-voltage sensing. It also features active current limit and over-current protection, as well as soft-start and overvoltage protection, among others. The MAX5900LCEUT+T can be used to quickly power-up, shut down, or reset the board level power supplies.
The MAX5900LCEUT+T has two core components: the PWM Controller, which generates the PWM control signals based on the inputted parameters, and the Hot Swap Controller, which controls the sourcing and sinking of power to the port power supplies.
The PWM Controller is responsible for setting the duty cycle and frequency of the PWM signal. This signal is then used to control the power inputted to the circuit. The duty cycle is set to provide the desired output voltage and the frequency is used to generate the over/under-voltage protection as well as the soft-start.
The Hot Swap Controller is responsible for controlling the power supplied to the port power supplies. It uses an analog-configurable soft-start, over and under-voltage sensing, and per-channel current limit protection to protect the board during the power-up and power-down stages. During power-up, the Hot Swap Controller monitors the voltage and current levels of the port power supplies and, when the power input is within acceptable limits, the Hot Swap Controller will enable the port power supplies. During power-down, the Hot Swap Controller will limit the current through the port power supplies as the voltage and current levels drop below the threshold levels.
The MAX5900LCEUT+T incorporates a variety of advanced protection features for the voltage, current, and temperature protection of board level power supplies. These protection features ensure that the board level power supplies are always at the desired voltage and current levels, even when the power input is unstable. This makes the MAX5900LCEUT+T ideal for powering even the most delicate and sensitive board level circuits.
The MAX5900LCEUT+T is designed to help maximize the efficiency of board level power supplies and protect them against external power surges and over-current spikes. Its Hot Swap Controller and PWM Controller can be used to quickly and reliably power-up and power-down electronic circuits in an orderly and safe manner. It also provides over/under-voltage protection, active current limit and over-current protection, and soft-start protection to ensure that board level circuits are always powered correctly and safely.
