Hot Swap Controllers are devices used in order to safely control the insertion and removal of components or devices in a circuit without interrupting power. The MAX5901ABEUT+T is a Hot Swap Controller designed to provide constant inrush current protection during board insertions and device removals. It can be used in designs where it is necessary to hot swap batteries, FPGAs, ASICs, and other components reliably.

The main features of the MAX5901ABEUT+T are low quiescent current consumption, high accuracy current limit, and programmable current limit. It has an adjustable current limit of 0.2A to 3A. The quiescent current consumption is only 1.7mA at the typical voltage of 2.7V. The device has a built-in voltage regulator that provides a 3V supply for the reporting circuits. It also has an open drain PG pin that pulls low during an overtemperature event to indicate an overtemperature condition.

In order to guarantee its effectiveness, the maximum operating temperature of the MAX5901ABEUT+T is guaranteed to be 40°C. The device is provided in a 16-pin quad flat no-lead (QFN) package with a 1.5mm height. It is suitable for applications where board space is restricted.

Working Principle: The MAX5901ABEUT+T operates by monitoring the current flowing through the load, and limiting the current within a set range. When the input voltage is greater than the voltage drop across the power switch, then current flows through the switch and the load, and the current is monitored. When the current exceeds the current limit, then the power switch is disabled and the current is cut off.
