Data Acquisition - Digital to Analog Converters (DAC)

The MCP47FEB02A2T-E/ST from Microchip Technology Inc. is a 12-bit +sign Digital TO Analog Converter (DAC), that uses a simple and reliable 3-wire Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). It has been designed for applications where optimal performance is required in a minimal amount of space. It can operate from a supply voltage from one 3-V battery to a regulated 5-V supply and has a fast settling time of 14μs with a maximum transfer rate of 10MHz. The DAC has an on-chip buffer with an adjustable output range of 2.5V, 4.096V, or 5V. It also includes temperature range of -40 to +85°C.

Working principle

The MCP47FEB02A2T-E/ST DAC can operate from a voltage range of 1.8V to 5.5V, and it is adjustable over a 12-bit range. The DAC output can be programmed by the user to generate analog voltage levels. The data is provided by a 3-wire SPI bus that includes a serial data line and a clock line, with a dedicated enable line. The device can be operated in both single data write or sequential write mode.

In single data write mode, the user can select any one of the 32 data codes available in the MCP47FEB02A2T-E/ST’s on-chip register. In this mode, the user must write command and data bits, start the conversion, wait for conversion to complete, read the output voltage and then start another conversion.

In sequential write mode, the user can select any of the 32 data codes available and then program the DAC for a series of conversions using the same command, data, and do cycles. The sequential mode greatly reduces the overhead of multiple conversions and increases throughput.

The MCP47FEB02A2T-E/ST comes with an internal buffer, which can be enabled and disabled for different configurations. With the buffer enabled, the output will stay at the programmed value even after a power cycle; with the buffer disabled, the output voltage will stay at the programmed value as long as the device receives power.
