PMIC - Hot Swap Controllers

The MAX4273ESE+T is a highly integrated, secondary side power-management integrated circuit that includes a load switch, CHRG circuit, current sensing, and thermal and over voltage protection. The device is optimized to drive the gates of hot swapping MOSFETs using external current sourcing circuitry and external drain gate resistors. This application field and working principle of the MAX4273ESE+T will now be explored.

Application Field

The MAX4273ESE+T is an ideal solution for On/Off controlling undervoltage, overcurrent and overvoltage protection, along with additional integrated features that are useful for reliably controlling power supplies. The features of the device make it suitable for mid-to-low power Hot Swap applications in quick-connect/disconnect server and telecommunications systems, where supply remote power-up with immunity to unexpected loads is required.

Particularly, the device offers superior protection against damaging conditions such as inrush current, peak current and over voltage. Other features make the MAX4273ESE+T a must in hot swap applications, like short circuit protection, instantaneous current limiting, abort commands, enable port parity and RoHS compliance.

The 2.5A rated load current of the device allows it to hot-swap up to 15.2W in USB or server applications, or to backplane solutions. Its wide operating range of 2V to 16V makes it suitable for 3.3V, 5V, 12V, and multiple cell battery inputs systems.

Working Principle

The MAX4273ESE+T works in unity with external MOSFETs connected to the Hot Swap pin, Supply and Ground. The device requires an accurate external current source to operate with maximum safety in case of an overload condition. The charge resistor should be selected, so that the required voltage is generated across the sensing resistor and is equal to the Hot Swap pin threshold.

Whenever an over-current event is detected, the device limits the current to the remaining permitted value and keeps controlling it until the fault is removed and the device is reset. During this process, the current threshold value is slightly adjusted to confirm the removal of the fault condition.

Also, an external circuit should be incorporated in order to ensure that the current source operation is possible over the voltages and current levels of the system operation.

Based on the power connection and operating state, the output of the Hot Swap pin will rise and be held at the voltage threshold level to turn on the external MOSFET. Once the output of the MOSFET goes high, the voltage at the Drain pin rises and experiences an inrush current. Due to this event, the CS pin voltage also increases and is compared internally to the Turn-On (TON) threshold set. If the voltage goes beyond the threshold point, the Hot Swap pin shuts off and the MOSFET is turned off.

The device will also account for the current demand of the load and if the load requires more current than the device can deliver, the device will activate the Load Disconnect (LD) stage and the Out put will fall below the Turn-On threshold set, thus shutting off the MOSFET.

The LGD pin acts as a fault detection mechanism. Whenever the Drain voltage of the MOSFET falls to a level lower than the SSR threshold voltage, the Load Disconnect process is triggered.

The IMON pin at the same time measures the current passing through the external MOSFET by sensing the voltage that appears across the sensing resistor. The device will monitor the perceived current level and compare it with the allowed threshold current.

The MAX4273ESE+T provides advanced protection features against thermal and over voltage events. The device sets a maximum internal temperature of 125C and whenever this value is reached, the device shuts off. It also is designed to use external N-MOSFETs in order to shield the device from high energy events.

In addition, the OTP (Over Voltage/Under Voltage Protection) pin is provided as a reference to detect over/under voltages. Its over/under voltage thresholds are selectable between 2V and 16V making it suitable for a wide range of voltage applications. Thus, the OTP pin monitors the voltage level of the incoming voltage source.

The Max4273ESE+T also includes an abort pin that allows the user to cancel any pending operation or reset the device in order to interrupt any current lin flow. Finally, an enable pin is featured as an active low logic control which allows the user to enable or disable the system externally.

All of these features and capabilities make the MAX4273ESE+T a truly complete and well-rounded Hot Swap Controllers for a variety of applications in the mid-to-low power range, enabling reliable, safe and efficient supply of power in quick-connect/disconnect server and telecommunications systems.
