AD558JD Data Acquisition - Digital to Analog Converters (DAC)
The AD558JD is a monolithic digital-to-analog converter (DAC) of the IVZERO multichip solution provided by Linear Technology Corporation. The DAC features a 10-bit resolution, high speed and low distortion providing a digitally programmable analog output. The device is designed for high speed applications such as DSP, data acquisition, machine vision, data logging, waveform generation and motion control.The device provides adjustable output ranges from 0 to 5V, 1.25 to 5V, and 0 to 10V. The output update rate up to 1.2M samples/sec is achievable with excellent linearity performance over temperature, and superior dynamic performance resulting in minimal glitches at the output.Application Field

The working principle of the AD558JD is to convert a digital input word into an analog output voltage. The AD558JD contains a 10-bit Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) and a voltage reference, both connected across the device\'s output and ground terminals. The DAC is connected to both the input word and the reference voltage.The input word is structured into two parts - the upper 8 bits define the output voltage range and the lower 8 bits define the output voltage. When the voltage range is set, the DAC compares the input word to the reference voltage, with the output voltage proportional to the difference between the two. For example when the upper 8-bits are set to maximum, the output voltage will increase from 0V to the amplitude of the reference voltage.The output is clocked at the device\'s operating frequency determined by the external clock source. The device can achieve a maximum output update rate of 1.2M samples per second.The AD558JD does not require an external capacitor for stabilization, as there is an internal feedback loop that maintains a stable output voltage for both single and dual supply operation. The device also provides a power-down mode allowing the output voltage to quickly settle to approximately 0V within 10µs.The AD558JD is tailored to operate best at mid-level voltages and therefore, adjustable gain and offset circuits can be used to scale the output voltage range.
