The PI49FCT20802QEX is a high-performance, low-power clock buffer designed for networking, computing and consumer applications. This device is able to buffer and isolate a single low-level source clock, an enable/disable input, and generate 9 independent non-overlapping clock outputs with adjustable drive strength and minimal skew. This clock buffer is an integral part of any multi-clock system, providing a single point of adjustment to the overall clock system performance.

The PI49FCT20802QEX clock buffer operates using a 5V or 3.3V VCC power supply and is based on differential-level clock buffers. It has an operating temperature range of 0°C to 75°C, an extended temperature range of -40°C to +85°C, and a maximum clock period for low-level input clock of 4 ns.

Working Principle

The PI49FCT20802QEX clock buffer is designed to be used as a single slave clock controlling and driving multiple outputs, isolating and leveling the high-frequency clock signals from their sources. The device can either perform clock multiplexing (leveraging on a single REFCLK input) or clock buffering and isolation (leveraging on a pair of REFCLK and REFCLK2). The device has programmable functions such as enable/disable controls and 9 independent non-overlapping outputs and adjustable drive strength.

The PI49FCT20802QEX clock buffer typically operates with a low-level input clock or differential input clock signals. The input clock enters the buffer via the REFCLK and REFCLK2 pins. If differential clocking is required, the REFCLK and REFCLK2 inputs must be connected to the same low-level signal source. The device has a frequency range of 0.5 MHz to 6 GHz, an output skew of less than 20 ps between clock outputs, and an adjustable duty cycle from 50% to 70%.

The output of the PI49FCT20802QEX clock buffer is optimized for minimal jitter. The outputs feed separate clock sources and can be individually enabled/disabled by the respective ENABLE pins. The outputs of the buffer can drive both LVDS and LVPECL level receivers. This gives the user the freedom to select the best receiver for their application. Furthermore, the device offers programmable drive strength level of either 4 mA or 8 mA.

In addition to its excellent propagation delays, the device provides a high level of signal integrity and isolation. This ensures that the clock signal is not contaminated by EMI or crosstalk. The device comes with guaranteed maximum skew of 10 ps and static jitter of 0.15 UI, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
