The ADF4156BCPZ is an integrated frequency synthesizer with an integrated voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). It is designed to generate frequencies from 8.192 MHz to 4 GHz with the output frequency determined by a digital code programmed into the device. The analog component of the synthesizer is the VCO, which produces the output frequency, and the digital component is a digital phase frequency detector (PFD) and a programmable divide ratio that can be adjusted to control the output frequency by programming the code inputs. The ADF4156BCPZ provides high phase noise performance up to 4 GHz. Applications of the synthesizer range from frequency modulation (FM) broadcast to satellite communications and wireless local area networks (WLAN).The ADF4156BCPZ is a monolithic device and consists of a PLL, a VCO and a divide-by-N/2 divider. The PLL consists of a phase frequency detector (PFD) and a charge pump that produce an analog control signal. This control signal is used to adjust the VCO frequency in order to lock the PLL onto the input reference frequency. The divided-by-N/2 divider creates a divide-by-N output, which is the output frequency of the synthesizer. The output frequency can be programmed by selecting the reference frequency, the divide ratio and the fractional divide ratio.The ADF4156BCPZ has two programmable divide ratios, N and (N/2 + x). The output frequency is then determined by the equation:Output Frequency = [Reference Frequency] x [(N/2 + x) / N]The divide ratio N can be programmed from 2 to 4095 and the fractional divide ratio x can be programmed from 0 to 4095. The range of the output frequency of the synthesizer is from 8.192 MHz to 4 GHz. The PLL operates up to 250 MHz and the VCO operates up to 4 GHz.One of the advantages of the ADF4156BCPZ is its low noise performance. The typical phase noise is better than –105 dBc/ Hz within 10 kHz offset at 4 GHz with a +5 V single power supply. The low-noise characteristics of the ADF4156BCPZ makes it suitable for communication systems, such as satellite communications, wireless local area networks (WLAN), WiMAX and cellular networks. It is also suitable for frequency modulation (FM) broadcast, frequency-hopping applications and intelligent meters.The ADF4156BCPZ has an operating temperature range from –40 to +85°C and a power supply voltage from +3.3 to +7 V. It is available in a small 16-lead LLP package and requires very few external components.
