The CDC2509BPWRG4 is a clock synthesizer optimized for high-performance processor, system, interface and memory clocking applications. It includes an embedded PLL and voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) and provides high output frequencies, fast locking time and low jitter. It also offers a wide array of features such as programmable output frequency, selectable spread spectrum and programmable slew rate.

Working Principle

The CDC2509BPWRG4 uses a phase-locked loop (PLL) and voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) to generate multiple, tightly regulated clocks from a single crystal or reference input. The PLL locks onto the reference input, which can be a crystal oscillator, a signal from a silicon-germanium (SiGe) synthesizer, or a nominal 100MHz, 200MHz, or 400MHz input signal. The PLL then provides a feedback signal to the VCO to ensure frequency accuracy. The VCO frequency is determined by the ratio between the feedback signal and the reference frequency. The higher the ratio, the higher the VCO frequency.

The CDC2509BPWRG4 also has programmable output frequency and selectable spread spectrum modes. The programmable output frequency enables customers to tailor the output clock frequency to their needs without the need for external components. The selectable spread spectrum modes reduce the spectral energy of the output clock to reduce EMI. It also includes programmable output slew rate, which can be configured to reduce ringing on the output clocks.
