The LTC3785EUF is a high performance synchronous step-down switching controller which is specifically designed to operate in multiple input power providing industry standard power management circuit. It is classified as PMIC - Voltage Regulators - DC DC Switching Controllers. Besides integrating features such as Internal Soft-Start, ability to skip a cycle, and adjustable pre-bias system voltage and current limit making it able to support a wide variety of applications.

The LTC3785EUF was designed to provide a low component count, high efficiency power solution. Due to its high efficiency and integration, it is commonly used in various electronic products such as medical equipment, industrial equipment, wireless and wired telecommunications systems, as well as domestic appliances.

The key features of the LTC3785EUF include adjustable output voltage range from 0.7V to 5.5V, up to 10A switching current capability and a maximum switching frequency up to 850kHz. Moreover, the device is packaged in a low profile thermally enhanced MSOP-8 package which is optimized for the demanding requirements of high current and low voltage applications, making it a suitable device for applications requiring high power density in small form factor.

The LTC3785EUF provides its excellent performance via a variety of internal protection features. These includes over-temperature protection, under voltage lockout, over current protection and cycle-by-cycle current limit. The device is also designed with isolated high-side and low-side drivers which provides improved noise immunity and EMI reduction. All of the above features ensure that the device supports the most stringent industrial and commercial applications.

As for the working principle, the LTC3785EUF controller is designed for current-mode control. In a current-mode control scheme, the voltage across a current sense resistor is compared to an internal error amplifier reference. The error amplifier controls an internal high-side gate drive transistor and a low-side gate drive transistor, which form a high-side/low-side circuit. When the current sense voltage is higher than the reference voltage, the high-side gate is turned off and the low-side gate is turned on. Conversely, when the current sense voltage is lower than the reference voltage, the low-side gate is turned off and the high-side gate is turned on. The cycle repeats indefinitely and the current flowing through the switching transistors follows as a pulse width across the power supply voltage.

The LTC3785EUF can be used as an ideal replacement for discrete buck or boost regulators, or as a synchronous rectifier with an external high-side driver. The device integrates the necessary circuitry including leads, high and low-side drivers, high frequency output filter, 200mA LDO and current limit functions. With the LTC3785EUF, engineers can greatly reduce their design time, improve their system performance, reduce the size of their solution, and provide a high-degree flexibility for their applications.
