TPS7A85EVM-754 Application Field and Working Principle

The TPS7A85EVM-754 is a evaluation board that applies to linear voltage regulators. This evaluation board is intended to provide flexibility and easy implementation for TI’s TPS7A85 family of ultra-low-noise low-dropout linear regulators. It is suitable for a variety of applications, including clean power supplies for test & measurement and communications; high-performance linear voltage regulation to control power supply noise or generate reference voltage; or ultra-low-noise regulation for precision instrumentation.

The TPS7A85EVM-754 includes one TPS7A85 regulator device and a wide voltage input range as low as 2.95V and as high as 36V. The output voltage range can be spanned from 0.8V to 28V, and includes adjustable and fixed options. It also features protection features against short-circuit, over-temperature, and over-current. Through the adjustable output voltage, the output voltage is adjustable from 0.8V to 28V, allowing different settings to be tested.

The operating principle of the TPS7A85EVM-754 is based on the hysteretic topology. It operates by controlling a current through an internal hysteretic comparator responsible for driving its output voltage. When the input voltage is powered, the hysteretic comparator sets the output voltage to the offset voltage. Then a current is programmed to drive the output voltage towards the desired level. Once the output voltage reaches the set level, the hysteretic comparator goes into regulation and keeps the output voltage in a fixed voltage window.

In addition, the TPS7A85EVM-754 includes external components to assist system protection, including reverse current protection, over current protection, and short proof protection. The reverse current protection limits the current flow to the output from the input when the output is pulled below the input voltage. The over current protection limits the negative output current resulting from a short to ground, or an overpowering load. The maximum current limit is 16A. The short proof protection helps to limit the stress on the devices by limiting the current when a short is applied to the output of the regulator. This protection helps to limit the maximum power dissipation when a short occurs.

The TPS7A85EVM-754 provides an excellent solution for low-noise linear voltage regulation. It is suitable for a variety of applications, including clean power supplies for test & measurement and communications, high-performance linear voltage regulation to control power supply noise, and ultra-low-noise regulation for precision instrumentation.
