LMR14020SEVM is a DC-DC/AC-DC offline SMPS evaluation board used to evaluates and test the operation of the LMR14020S based off-line SMPS designs. This evaluation board is designed to help engineers verify and debug the design, and is also a low cost alternative when evaluating the features of the LMR14020S switching power supply IC.The LMR14020SEVM board is capable of operating from an input voltage range of 85V AC to 265V AC and delivering up to 5A of output current. The entire board design is based on the LMR14020S IC and its associated components, providing the user a comprehensive and easy to use hardware platform including voltage programming, monitoring, bias control, no-load protection and other features. The evaluation board comes with user-programmable circuits for voltage programming, frequency control, over temperature protection, output voltage monitoring, and load current sensing. The board also includes an on-board trimmer potentiometer that can be adjusted to provide the desired output voltage.The basic working principle of the LMR14020SEVM is that of a switching power supply. The IC is capable of taking an input voltage source from an AC or DC source and converting it into a desired DC output voltage. The IC contains the necessary circuitry to control the switching of the power transistors, provide over current protection, and maintain a stable DC output voltage.The power supply’s operation begins with the switching of the power stage. This is accomplished by the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) controller inside the LMR14020S IC which is pre-programmed to provide an output voltage depending on the type of switching device used. The PWM controller will produce pulses at a set frequency that will control the power switching frequency of the power transistors in the power stage. The control signals are then sent to a power stage consisting of power transistors that will switch the AC voltage from the input source into the DC output. The output voltage is controlled by a voltage control circuit in the IC which maintains a required voltage level. The actual output voltage is monitored by an opto-coupler circuit in the IC and fed back to a voltage control loop that will adjust the duty cycle of the PWM controller in order to maintain the output voltage at the desired level. The board also includes components that provide over current protection, input current limit, and output voltage monitoring. When the board is operating, current flows through a current sensing resistor that will trip the current limit circuitry in the event of an over current condition. The board also includes an opto-coupler circuit for monitoring the output voltage and an adjustable current limit potentiometer for delivering desired output current upon request.In summary, the LMR14020SEVM evaluation board is a complete, low cost, and easy to use hardware platform designed to help engineers evaluate different off-line SMPS designs and verify their operation. It utilizes the LMR14020S IC and its associated components to provide a comprehensive set of features including voltage programming, monitoring, over temperature, bias control, no-load protection, and current sensing for over current events. The board is capable of operating from an AC voltage input source and delivers up to 5A of output current.
