Working Principle
The AD7794 uses a sigma-delta-modulated architecture to convert analog inputs to digital representation. The sigma-delta-modulator is made up of a regular switching circuit which can be connected to an analog input. The input signal is converted into a pulse density, which is in turn converted into a digital code. To reduce the effects of input noise, the sigma-delta-modulator contains two separate digital filter stages. The first stage is an Incremental Sigma-Delta Modulator, and the second is a Decimation Filter.First, the Incremental Sigma-Delta Modulator (ISD) converts the analog input into a pulse density. The ISD is a linear approximation filter which compares the input voltage to a preselected reference voltage. It then outputs a signal when the voltage difference is greater than a given threshold and outputs no signal when it is lower.The output of the ISD is then processed by the Decimation Filter. It works by taking the output of the ISD and running it through a low-pass filter. This serves to further reduce input noise and improves the precision of the digital code produced. The output of the Decimation Filter is the digital code that is sent to the output. This digital code is then compared with the expected digital output of the ADC.
The EVAL-AD7794EBZ provides a powerful tool for users to easily evaluate and test the performance of the AD7794 for different application fields.
