The NCP1337ADAPEVB evaluation board from ON Semiconductor is designed to facilitate development activities related to application fields of off-line DC/DC and AC/DC power supplies using the NCP1337 as well as other NCP13xx family of adaptor controllers. The NCP1337 is an easy-to-use flyback converter controller with integrated active burst mode technology for advanced system efficiency. It also includes extensive protection and system diagnostic features. The NCP1337 provides a complete solution for off-line Flyback converters used in power systems ranging from 5 Watts to over 50 Watts, and is suitable for applications such as chargers, adapters, display panels, and industrial and medical systems.
The NCP1337ADAPEVB has an integrated circuit (IC) socket to easily accommodate the NCP1337, as well as a heatsink to provide sufficient thermal dissipation. The board also includes an integrated transformer, flyback diode, fast-recovery diode, thermistor, bypass capacitor, output capacitor, and high current potentiometer. The board also includes a wide selection of jumper blocks and test points for controlling and monitoring all of the device’s parameters. The design enables quick and easy evaluation of the NCP1337 in various topologies.
The working principle of the NCP1337ADAPEVB is based on the NCP1337’s active burst mode technology. In Active Burst mode, the NCP1337 periodically switches on briefly to assess the loading of the output power stage. If the load is light, it switches off to maintain efficiency. The burst cycle continues until the peak load is reached, at which point the normal mode is activated and steady-state operation commences. The NCP1337 also integrates protection and system diagnostics functions such as short-circuit protection, over-temperature protection, overload protection, and brownout protection.
The NCP1337ADAPEVB also includes a graphical user interface (GUI) for monitoring and evaluating the NCP1337’s operational characteristics. It includes an interactive plotting facility for measuring output voltage, current, power, and efficiency. The user can also select from a variety of setup parameters to control the operation of the NCP1337, including peak switch current, peak switch voltage, duty cycle, switching frequency, and soft-start parameters. The GUI also includes an extensive library of reference designs.
