TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor Diodes) are used to protect electronic equipment from damage due to electrical over-voltage such as electrostatic discharge (ESD) or lightning. This is a phenomenon that occurs in PN-type semiconductor devices when electric fields reach a certain critical value, resulting in a sharp rise in current through the device. The amount of current that can be sustained in this mode is determined by the structure of the device and its parameters. This phenomenon is used in the SMF5.0A to protect electronic components from transient occurrences.

When protection is needed, the SMF5.0A is triggered by the external transient and moves into an Avalanche Breakdown state. The current it can distribute is limited by the maximum breakdown voltage which is determined by the device construction. The SMF5.0A then dissipates the energy of the transient and returns to its original low current state.
