SMCJ150CA Product Features and Benefits

The SMCJ150CA is a high stability/ high capacity 1500W diode that provides superior protection against large voltage spikes. The diode offers fast response times, even for short duration transients, greater than 2.5kV of peak power clamping voltage, high capacitance and high energy handling capability.

SMCJ150CA Working Principle

The SMCJ150CA is designed to clamp transients in a range of voltages. The device works by utilizing the avalanche breakdown effect, in which the current flowing through the diode increases exponentially at a threshold voltage, called the peak inverse voltage (PIV). The current continues to increase until it reaches a point where the power dissipated in the diode is insufficient to continue the breakdown, at which point the diode is destroyed.

When a transient occurs, the SMCJ150CA will conduct current from the related power supply line until the breakdown voltage is reached. At this point, current will be diverted from the supply line, providing a power surge suppression effect. As the PIV is reached, the power diverted from the line is dissipated within the diode, regulating the voltage and preventing excessive peaks and surges from damaging other downstream components.
