Voltage controlled oscillators, commonly known as VCOs, are widely used in various application fields due to their wide operating range and excellent phase noise performance. One of the most outstanding VCOs is the HMC1166LP5E. This VCO is based on the same 3.6 x 1.6 mm surface-mount hermetic enclosure which is currently used by several semiconductor manufacturers. The HMC1166LP5E is specially designed for applications that need high-frequency and low-power operation. It features an excellent dynamic frequency range and phase noise performance.
The HMC1166LP5E is a dual VCO with a total of seven channels. It operates in the range of 203MHz(min) to 900MHz(max). It supports unidirectional, bidirectional and quadrature mode. It has a high-frequency DC offset range of 89MHz to 266MHz and a low-frequency DC offset of 15.7MHZ. This wide range of frequency range make it suitable for many application fields, such as radios, signal processing, automotive electronics, and communication systems.
The working principle of the HMC1166LP5E is based on a VCO topology. It is designed with two topologies, namely the multi-loop and the single-ended topologies. The two topologies are closely related, as they both utilize a reference oscillator. This reference oscillator is used to generate a baseband signal, which is then used as the input for the VCO.
