The RFD77310 is an integrated ambient light and proximity sensor module designed to accurately measure and detect the amount of ambient light and proximity of an object from a device with a customized firmware program. The RFD77310 is a 4-wire optically modulated and proximity-to-digital sensor. Its module design includes a high-sensitivity, low-power optical ASIC, a low-power RF front-end, an integrated low noise amplifier, an innovative signal conditioning system, and an embedded 8-bit microcontroller. The RFD77310 has an LED excitation source, two integrated ambient light sensors with a full-moon response, and a proximity-to-digital sensor. It also incorporates an adjustable power signal conditioning circuit, as well as a high-precision calibration cell with a temperature detection system.

The RFD77310 can measure two types of ambient light, visible (E0 to E2) and infrared (IRE). It also has a dynamic range of 1,000 lux which allows for accurate measurements over a wide range of lighting conditions. Its proximity sensor has a detection range of up to 10 cm with a resolution of 15 cm. The RFD77310 is programmable to interface seamlessly with any host application and features an improved power-down algorithm for exceptional power efficiency.

The working principle of the RFD77310 is based on the use of two optically modulated, active-pixel sensor elements with integrated ASICs. These two elements are illuminated by the LEDs and read out via a third element connected to the ASIC which measures the reflected light. The proximity sensor’s output is then calculated by the integrated microcontroller. Then the calculated ambient light and proximity values are then available for an external device to process. This working principle of the RFD77310 is desinged to enable systems to accurately and simultaneously measure both ambient light and proximity in a single build.
