MCP-3903-E/SS is an application-field-specific analog front end (AFE) device widely used in data acquisition systems. This part has been specifically designed for monitoring and measuring electrical parameters in multirate applications, among other applications. It is able to capture and provide highly accurate current, voltage and power data at a continuous rate, as well as per-cycle and per-demand measurement for energy consumption, among other types of data.
The MCP-3903-E/SS consists of two parts. The Analog Front End (AFE) and the Subsystem. The AFE is responsible for the capture and conversion of electrical parameters, while the Subsystem processes these signals and provides calibration, gain and offset adjustment, temperature measurement, system diagnostics, and more.
This part contains a built-in analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and a 24-bit sigma-delta (Σ∆) modulator that can convert electrical signals into digital signals. The ADC has 8 bits of resolution, which is sufficient to provide accurate readings of current, voltage and power data. The MCP-3903-E/SS also has an integrated temperature and load sensing circuit to monitor temperature and load conditions.
The MCP-3903-E/SS enables the monitoring of electrical parameters over multiple phases and per cycle/demand measurement for energy usage. This part is capable of measuring up to 10 A of continuous current, at up to 5,000 Hz sample rates. Measuring instantaneous current, voltage and power is done by adjusting the voltage reference and comparing it to the actual voltage. In addition, the MCP3903-E/SS also features several safety features such as over temperature and over voltage detection, EMI (electromagnetic interference) protection and over voltage trip detection.
The AFE also supports calibration and gain/offset adjustment. The calibration feature allows the user to set a maximum value for input and output which will adjust the scale accordingly. The gain/offset adjustment feature allows the user to fine-tune the accuracy of the data captured by the component. Once the calibration and gain/offset are adjusted, the accuracy of the readings supplied by the MCP-3903-E/SS is excellent.
The operating temperature range of the MCP-3903-E/SS is -40°C to 125°C and the ambient temperature should range between 30°C to 85°C. The power supply voltage for the device should range from 5V to 15V and its current consumption is typically about 0.8mA. The component can also be used as a reference for other components as it can supply a 2.5V reference voltage.
