Embedded FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) are purpose-built integrated circuits designed to be used as general-purpose programmable logic devices. The most commonly used type is the ICE40LP1K-CB81, a low-density (<1,000 Look Up Tables/LUTs) FPGA chip based on Lattice Semiconductor’s iCE40LP Series. The iCE40LP Series is an inexpensive, power-efficient, small-footprint, low-risk FPGA with an exceptionally low learning curve.

Designers often select components such as FPGAs and processors based on how they handle data rates, power, and size in their system. Highly predictable, low-power features set the iCE40LP Series apart from its competitors. Its low power consumption makes it an ideal choice for use in battery-powered applications and edge devices where energy efficiency is key. Its very low pin-out and small die size will also make your project scalable and affordable.

The ICE40LP1K-CB81 also has a Logic Cell Array (LCA) which is a group of logic gates wired together that can perform multiple logic functions. The advantage of the LCA is that it helps to reduce the amount of wiring and chip size which results in better performance and lower cost. Each LCA consists of a number of Look-Up Tables, or LUTs, which are configured to perform a specific function. This can be used to reduce or eliminate the need for lengthy wiring tasks and complex hardware designs, reducing overall development time.

To further reduce cost and improve design efficiency, the ICE40LP1K-CB81 includes additional device architecture such as its embedded memory, timing resources and routing resources. Embedding memory within the ICE40LP1K-CB81 allows designers to store data so that it can be easily retrieved during program execution, which reduces power and size constraints. The timing resources embedded into the device help to improve system clock accuracy and speed. The routing resources help designers route the signals from one logic block to another, reducing the need to redundantly map signals.

Designers have tremendous flexibility when creating a system with the ICE40LP1K-CB81. Its configurable logic blocks, routed interconnections, and embedded memory can be used to customize complex functions and create custom combinatorial and sequential logic applications. In addition, the device’s integrated N-way look-up tables can be used to quickly implement numerous functions, such as packing and unpacking, pattern matching, data flow control, and pipelining.
