One such component is the Maxim Integrated Max14650EZA+T, an automatic lithium-ion/polymer battery charger and temporary-battery backup with integrated power-failure detection. When put to work, the Max14650EZA+T works on a two-phase process, during the first phase the primary lithium battery (Li-ion/Li-Poly) is charged with a constant current of up to 110mA, and a constant voltage of 4.2V. The point at which the current is reduced to a trickle is determined by the user and can go as low as 40mA, depending on the type and capacity of the battery. During this phase, the battery will slowly increase its capacity as extra power is being stored in the lithium-ion cells.
On the second stage, the battery is monitored and the system is ready to detect the power failure and act on it. The power failure detect mode is configured according to the user needs and can detect a power failure as low as to 0.8V. As long as the supply voltage falls below the power-fail detection level, the Max14650EZA+T will switch to the battery enable mode and begin to provide a constant current of up to 100mA to the system, allowing a quick switch to the Li-ion/Li-Poly battery.
When the main power supply is restored, the Max14650EZA+T will switch back to the charging mode automatically and continue to monitor the battery to ensure a steady and reliable charge until the battery is completely full. The switching between the charging and enable modes is seamlessly done and allows the user to benefit from an efficient and reliable power supply.
Fields of application for the Max14650EZA+T are vast, as this PMIC can supply crucial power to many fields, including but not limited to portable computers, laptops, LCDs, intelligent lighting and similar systems. In addition to this, the backup current can also be used during low peak times and even in conjunction with solar panel output, to help maintain a steady and reliable system performance.
