The U6815BM-NFLG3 is an advanced PMIC (power management integrated circuit) from the Power Distribution Switches, Load Drivers family. It includes a voltage regulation block, protection and monitoring functions, load drivers, and a current sense amplifier, all of which are integrated in a very small form factor. This allows designers to integrate more features into their products without having to sacrifice board space and/or performance.

The purpose of a power distribution switch is to selectively control the flow of power to loads in the system. The U6815BM-NFLG3 is designed to do exactly this; it allows designers to control which loads in their system receive power, at what voltage, while also providing protection and monitoring features. This is all done through the use of three integrated input drivers, two integrated power MOSFETs, and two resistive current sense amplifiers.

The first of the three drivers is a high-side switch driver. This driver is used to control the voltage supplied to the load, by acting as an interface between the voltage regulator and the load. The second driver is a low-side switch driver which is used to control the current supplied to the load. The third driver is an error amplifier that is used to compare the regulated output voltage of the system to the desired voltage using feedback. When the voltage goes out of tolerance, the system will automatically adjust the output voltage to maintain accuracy.

The two integrated MOSFETs are configured in an H-Bridge configuration with high-side and low-side drivers, allowing for bidirectional current flow and for pulse-width modulation. The two resistive current sense amplifiers are used to sense the current being supplied to the load and measure it against the maximum allowed for the device. If excessive current is detected, then the system will automatically shut off power to the load to avoid damage.

The U6815BM-NFLG3 includes several protection and monitoring functions that further add to its versatility. It has a thermal shutdown protection feature to protect against overheating of the device, as well as a reverse current protection feature to guard against the flow of reverse current. It also features an open drain reset function, which can be used to reset the system in the event of a system fault, and an Over-Current Protection (OCP), which detects when excessive current is flowing through the system and automatically shuts off the power to avoid damage.

In addition, the U6815BM-NFLG3 also features a diagnostics and monitoring system that actively monitors the system’s performance by identifying impending faults and warning the user of potential problems. This feature is especially useful for monitoring the performance of the system under different conditions, as well as preventing faults from occurring.
