AD8436ARQZ Application Field and Working PrincipleAD8436ARQZ is an integrated single-channel, low-noise RMS to DC converter integrated circuit (IC) from Analog Devices. This IC is designed to convert the root mean square (RMS) of the input signal into its DC equivalent voltage, allowing measurement of true RMS power. It is a type of power management integrated circuit (PMIC) which is characterized by a wide input range and is ideal for measuring AC power in consumer electronics, automotive applications, and other high voltage circuits. The AD8436ARQZ RMS to DC converter includes a precision, low noise, lightweight, and integrated architecture which provides extremely low power dissipation and superior levels of linearity and accuracy. Its low-noise performance is enabled by a proprietary topology, which minimizes the amount of noise induced by the device and ensures that the output is maintained within an appropriate range for the application. In addition, the device is space efficient and requires no external components, enabling it to be used in a variety of applications. The device offers two selectable conversion speeds: 0.5 μs and 4 μs. The 0.5 μs speed is suitable for a wide range of applications that require low noise, while the 4 μs speed offers faster response time and is suitable for applications with dynamic requirements. The AD8436ARQZ is capable of achieving RMS to DC conversion with an input range of 70 VRMS up to 400 VRMS. The device is also configured to measure true power at the load by calculating the value at the load and then subtracting the correction factor(s).The main features of the AD8436ARQZ are its high accuracy, low noise, wide input range, high bandwidth, low power consumption, and low parts count. The accuracy of the ADC is specified up to ±1%, and it operates from a single 5V supply and delivers a accuracy of ±3mA across its output range. The AD8436ARQZ has been used successfully in applications such as multi-channel audio amplifiers, AC/DC converters, and AC power meters. The AD8436ARQZ uses a new RMS-to-DC converter topology that allows for high accuracy and very low noise. Its RMS-to-DC conversion is based on a special AT-cut quartz crystal integrator loop topology where the input signal is integrated with a quartz crystal keeping the output at a fixed level. The AD8436ARQZ is capable of providing very high precision values even with high AC voltage inputs while consuming minimal power.
