The FOD3180SDV will clamp the instantaneous overvoltage on the input, while simultaneously diverting the excess surge to a series capacitor. This redirects the current and continues to absorb it, ensuring the connected equipment passes a safe level of surge current. The series capacitor acts as a low-pass filter, allowing the MOV to dissipate energy, reducing audible noise.
The FOD3180SDV also has built-in protection mechanisms to prevent it from overheating and entering a thermal runaway state. The MOV has an inherent positive temperature coefficient, meaning that as the temperature increases, the resistance of the MOV increases, slowing the current and dissipating the energy. The MOV also has a built-in triac mechanism, which will latch-off the MOV if it is exposed to an excessive voltage level causing an open circuit. This latch-off mechanism prevents further damage to the MOV.
