TCS37717FN is a color sensor developed by Texas Instruments. It is a CMOS image processing chip that measures color and illuminance. The device is used in mobile phones, tablets, PCs, wearables, medical instruments and other portable products to detect human skin, white balance, and other color sensing applications.
Color Sensors use different technologies to detect colors. In TCS37717FN, red-green-blue (RGB) photodiodes are used to convert received light into voltage. The light is then processed by the Minutiae Processing Unit (MPU) to provide digital color information. It also uses a pixel array and digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms to process images and determine color that is about to be measured.
The device has a low power consumption of 0.9 µA in standby mode and provides the computational power of a GPU, making it suitable for battery operated and portable devices. It is also a 1x1” and is integrated with a bright-in-dark (BID) control unit which allows to increase the sensitivity of operation in dark conditions.
TCS37717FN can be configured to measure various parameters such as red, green, blue (RGB), near-infrared (NIR), ultraviolet (UV) and luminance (ambient light) estimations. It also has a power tracking algorithm that allows the device to optimize the power consumption based on the output of the sensor for low power portable operation.
The device provides high quality color sensing with the help of its proprietary algorithms. It is capable of measuring accurate color values up to 40 fps, and stores the data in its on-device RAM or FIFO. It also supports features like “Rolling Color Interpolation (RCI)” which helps in eliminating fluctuations of the output due to environmental disturbances and ambient light changes.
The device supports different communication interfaces such as I²C, SPI and UART. It can also be configured through its built-in serial interface to support frameworks like I²C, SPI and UART to minimize host processor overhead, eases application integration and development.
Moreover, the device also provides digital I/O interrupt pins for external events like motion, color, temperature, and lux/irradiance for various sensing applications. With features like Self-Diagnostics, Programmable Manual Debug Modes and Programmable Diagnostics & Status Registers, the device offers reliable and enhanced sensing capabilities.
