Temperature measurement is an essential part of various industrial and automotive applications. A variety of sensors are available to detect temperature for various applications. One of the most common sensors employed for these applications is the type K thermocouple, or simply, the K-type thermocouple. The type K thermocouple is composed of two different metal wire combinations that are joined together with a spot weld or soldering. The wires used in this type of thermocouple are most commonly Nickel Chromium (NiCr) and Nickel Aluminum (NiAl). The voltage produced by the thermocouple is proportional to the temperature difference between the two wire junctions.

The maximum temperature range of type K thermocouples is -270°C to +1350°C (-454°F to +2462°F), and they are normally used for applications that require relatively lower temperatures. The maximum temperature range is generally extended up to +1600°C ( to +2912°F) when the thermocouple is graded 5, but the accuracy deteriorates with increasing temperature. They are often found in industrial control panels and various automotive applications.

A type K thermocouple is composed of two different elements that are connected in such a way that any temperature difference between the two junctions will cause a immediately voltage to be generated at the junctions in the thermocouple. This generated voltage is proportional to the temperature difference and can be used to measure the temperature at either one or both of the thermocouple\'s junctions. Thermocouple temperature probes are still one of the most widely used temperature measuring instruments because of their accuracy and reliability.

The working principle behind type K thermocouples is based on the principle of Seebeck effect. In the Seebeck effect, whenever two different metals are joined together they create an output voltage in a direct proportion to the difference in temperature between the two points. The thermocouple then detects the temperature difference between the two junction points and produces an output voltage.

Type K thermocouples are available in different physical sizes and shapes for various applications. Although one of the most common shape is cylindrical, other shapes such as flat or pointed are also available. They also vary in length according to the application. The most common diameters are 0.5mm, 1mm, 2mm, 4mm, and 8mm. The choice of which type K thermocouple to use depends on the application and temperature range.

The type K thermocouple can be used for a wide range of applications such as in industrial ovens, process control, climate control, food service, and lab equipment. Their high accuracy and reliability at any temperature makes them one of the most commonly used temperature sensors. Thus, type K thermocouples are employed in a variety of industries from automotive to industrial. They are reliable, cost effective, and are easy to install.
