Varistors, or voltage-dependent resistors (VDRs), and metal oxide varistors (MOVs) are electronic components used to protect electrical circuits from transient voltages and fast electrical transients. They are generally much more effective than linear voltage regulators, and they are significantly more reliable than silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCRs) or other semiconductor devices.Varistors, also known as voltage-dependent resistors, are non-linear two-terminal components consisting of two metal layers. One layer is an absorber of electrons and the other layer is a conductor of electrons. When a voltage greater than the breakdown voltage of the varistor is applied, the electrons in the zone between both layers move from one to the other, increasing the current through the device. This current can be used as a way of protecting the circuit, dissipating the energy that the transient has released. This is possible because the varistor is designed to have a low resistance at low voltages and a much higher resistance at the breakdown voltage. The breakthrough voltage will be determined by the material used for the absorber, as well as other design parameters.The second type of transient voltage suppressor is the MOV or metal oxide varistor. This is a three-terminal device consisting of a zinc oxide disc sandwiched between two metal plates. When an electric field is applied across the MOV, the positively charged ions in the zinc oxide layer move and the electrons in the layer move in the opposite direction. The movement of these ions causes a change in their configuration which in turn decreases the resistance between the terminals. This change in resistance can be used to absorb excess energy from transients.No matter which type of TVS is used, they both perform the same general function: providing a path for absorbing excess energy released by transients and protecting the circuit in which they are installed. By providing this protection, these devices can help minimize the damage caused by overvoltage conditions. They can also prevent electrical faults caused by momentary increases in voltage, known as voltage spikes. The application and working principles of these devices, along with their associated components, must be understood in order to select the appropriate type.
