Terminal Blocks - Barrier BlocksTerminal blocks, sometimes referred to as barrier blocks, are one of the simplest yet heavily relied-upon devices in electrical engineering and industrial robotics. Their purpose is to provide a uniform and robust piece of electrical wiring, allowing us to use a consistent design for each part of our circuit, even if very different electrical signals are present within a specific system.At the most basic level, a terminal block or barrier block will have two rows of contacts, known as pins. These pins will generally correspond to the specific wire type they are intended to accept. For example, the common three pin (red, green, and black) connector found in many electronic systems is supported by a three pin terminal block. On the larger-scale, such as larger industrial control units, the terminal blocks within may be 10 or 12 pins in size, for use with a vast array of electrical wiring. Terminal blocks are highly useful because they allow us to quickly connect and disconnect various cables and wiring without having to make physical changes to the device. This, in turn, allows us to make on-the-fly modifications without changing entire subsections of the circuit. Additionally, any wire type supported by the device can be quickly swapped in and out without much effort.In terms of their design principle, terminal blocks present little difficulty. Though the design of a specific terminal block will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, in general, we are presented with a flat sheet of metal that has been cut into various sizes, depending on the pin number of the device. Between each pair of metal blocks is a bushing, or an insulation material that acts to isolate the electrical connections made by the metal contact pins. The base of the terminal block is perforated with a number of holes, which are used to support the wires which fit into the device.Typically, the metal contact pins are deployed as either male, or female, inputs, and the wires from the circuit are connected directly to the contact pins. The pins may be supported via single or multiple metal sheets, again, depending on the device type. This arrangement allows for quick and easy wiring, while preserving some insulation between the connections. Finally, the terminal blocks are held together using either screws, nuts, or metal rods, depending on the specific application. The primary purpose for securing the block is to ensure that the wiring is held securely and won’t come into contact with any other components of the circuit. Additionally, this arrangement also helps with preventing the wiring from loosening during use. In conclusion, the terminal block or barrier block is an incredibly simple but highly useful design which is used extensively in modern-day electrical systems.
