Working Principle of 0454.375MR

The 0454.375MR works by connecting a heavy-duty lead wire between the two contacts, interposing a thin strip of metal in between; this thin strip of metal is known as a fuse link or fuse element. A series of dies and rolls shape the fuse link into a configuration that has a predetermined resistance.

When the current through the fuse exceeds the predetermined current rating, the fuse link heats up and starts to melt. As it melts, the resistance increases, diverting a larger portion of the circuit’s current from the device it is intended to protect. Eventually, the resistance of the fuse link rises to a point where all of the circuit’s current passes through it. As the fuse link melts away, the circuit breaks, and the excess current dissipates to the surrounding environment.

The 0454.375MR is designed to be a one-time open circuit protection device. It can only be returned to its original functional state by replacing the fuse with a new one. Conversely, circuit breakers are designed to be reset, as they remain the same after a fault is detected.
